In her early life, she spent nine years in a farm and at a factory during the Cultural Revolution until 1978 when she entered the Chinese University of Central Finance. She began publishing her writings in 1981

A political satirist in the guise of a mystical writer, Xu Xiaobin masterfully creates an atmosphere where distinctions are blurred; memories of the past and present are intertwined; realities and illusions are fused without a clear trace; and events occur in unspecified places but tinted with fairylike imaginations.

¡°Romanticism is on the lower spectrum when compared with the status of realism in Chinese literature," literary critic Chen Xiaoming says. ¡°Xu fills the blank.¡±

She was awarded the Lu Xun Prize for literature for her 1998 novella Pisces. In this year, she received Da Ya Feng international Prize for literature for her Flowers of Purgatory in Canada. Xu Xiaobin is a rare talent with a vast knowledge of history, religion, and culture, and occupies a unique place in modern Chinese literature. When Feathered Serpent won China¡¯s inaugural Creative Writing Award for women's literary fiction, it was described as ¡°a breakthrough, a record-setting novel in China's women's literature¡± and ¡°the best fiction at the end of the century in China.¡±

She is often invited to speak at international book fairs and literary festivals to represent the female voice of Chinese writing.

¡°The foreign interest in female writers has been rising since the late 1990s,¡± Xu says. ¡°I was among the first to speak to an international audience about the real situation of Chinese women.¡±

¡°I believe both my speeches and my stories show them that Chinese women are independent, intelligent and fashionable, with a pioneering spirit.¡±

She regularly participates in international conferences and workshops on women¡¯s writing. In 1996, she visited multiple campuses and gave seminars as a visiting female Chines writer in the US. In 2007, she was invited as an outstanding writer to attend ¡°An International Literature discussion¡± meeting sponsored by Rainer Schulte.  In 2011, she was invited to give a lecture in Harvard University.

In recent years, she has devoted most of her time to writing screenplays. Currently she serves as a senior staff screenplay writer at China Television Production Center. She lives in Beijing, P.R. China.
