Israel .

A native of Israel Mr. Halpern spent 5 years as a photographer for Israel leading newspaper Yediot Haharont, before leaving too NYC and studying film at the Piker Institute at CCNY.

In 1995 Mr. Halpern first short film CHANGE a 30 min comedy was chosen to represent City Collage at the Princes Grace Award. In that competition against representatives from 230 other colleges nation wide, Mr. Halpern won the 1995 Film Honorarium. This film was screened at the New York Angelica Film Center and WNYC.

A year later Mr. Halpern won the First Place at NPTE (National Association of Television Program Executives’) 1996 Student Public Service Announcements contest.

His final project RIVERSELL won regional college television award for Best Drama form the Academy of Television Arts and Science, as well as the Sidney Meyers Memorial Award for Best Screenplay.

In 1998 Mr. Halpern returned to Israel and started working in news, documentary film and television in Israel as a segment director for Israeli Television's Friday night news feature program, the YOMAN show (the most prestigious TV show in Israel at the time, something like 60 Minutes in the US). In 1999 he turned to guerilla documentary filmmaking where he direct, shot, edited and produced his own films in a unique and very personal style.

His first documentary A GUILT-FREE DAY AT THE BEACH is the first documentary ever to be shot in Israel during Yom Kippur - the holiest day of the Jewish faith. The movie is a light-headed, somewhat surreal walk through a car-free Tel-Aviv. It’s the story of a city that tries to act liberal but is in fact infected by the same racism and hate that dominates the rest of Israeli society.

Mr. Halpern’s second documentary was PSYCHEDELIC ZION. It’s the story of the rise and fall of Peace and Love Productions, a rave music organizing event company lead by 3 youngsters from the peri-urban areas of the Galil area in Northern Israel. It has since become a cult film for young people in Israel and around the world. With no marketing budgets the film was the second most successful documentary on theatrical releases in Israel and has been broadcast on Israeli television four times during the year 2001 alone. Psychedelic Zion had full house screenings at international festivals in New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, St Petersburg and Sheffield. The Film was also a finalist at the Israeli Academy Awards 2000.

His last documentary started in October 2000 it has been officially published somewhere that there is only one leopard left in the Judean desert south of Jerusalem. In October of that year he took upon himself the seemingly impossible task of filming the un-marked leopard that had been seen only once since 1995. Armed with a small DV camera, the filmmaker embarked upon a 24 -month journey in the footprints of the elusive cat the outcome of which is the film THE LAST LEOPARD OF JUDEA, a nature movie with a political subtest. The movie was shown for four months at the Tel-Aviv, Haifa, Rosh Pina and Sederot Cinemateques, as well as on Israeli TV and at the Global Visions International Film Festival.
